The brand name Chamberlain LiftMaster is well known for producing high-quality car access products such as garage door openers and gate operators. The LiftMaster 3800 is a very popular remote garage door opener highly praised for its near-silent operation and space-saving attributes.

What makes LiftMaster 3800 different from other openers?

This LiftMaster remote garage door opener has a 24 V DC motor that is virtually silent in operation when compared to traditional garage door openers. If your bedroom is next to or above the garage, then you’ll really appreciate how silent this opener is.

The space saving feature of not having to install a railing and mount the motor on it is absolutely brilliant! For many this increases the usable space considerably. For others that have been unable to install a garage door opener due to a low ceiling, this allows them finally to install a remote garage door opener!

Security

Included in the box is an automatic power door lock that automatically releases the door before opening it and automatically locks the door after the door is down. The lock is wires directly to the motor, so you don’t have to worry about the opener trying to open the door without unlocking the door lock first.

Since the LiftMaster 3800 is both mounted on the wall and also includes an automatic door lock, you are fully protected against burglars that try to pry the door open or use the coat-hanger trick (search youtube for a video on breaking into a garage using a coat-hanger) to get the door to release automatically. The coat-hanger trick is a very common way for burglars to open garage doors.

Safety

Also included in the package are safety sensors called The Protector System that are a safety reversing sensor. It is mounted near the bottom on the garage door but no more than 6″ above the floor. It creates an invisible light beam that automatically reverses the door if anyone crosses it when the garage door is closing. The units must be installed on the inside of the garage and mounted so the sending and receiving eyes face each other across the door. The mounting brackets are designed to clip onto the track of sectional garage doors without additional hardware.

Sensing technology will stop the door from closing if contact is made with a person or object. This is an extra security measure that provides additional safety in case

Installation

Do-It-Yourself installation is not hard (there is even a video series about it on YouTube, it’s embedded below on this page), but you must make sure that your garage door has been properly adjusted, especially if have heavy doors. The motor is mounted either on the left or right of the garage door and attached to the torsion bar. There are no rails to hang, so you’re free of that headache. The installation does not take more than a couple of hours on average.

When adjusting the opener you are aided by a built-in automatic force sensor, allowing you to finish your set up faster.

The major flaw about this product is that the LiftMaster 3800 relies on gravity to close the door. If you don’t require the door to be pulled all the way up then there should be no problem. For the rest of us however this becomes a problem. In my investigation around this issue, I found that many people successfully adjust the vertical top tracks so the door will naturally always be pulled down without any assistance.

Warranty

There is a lifetime warranty on the motor and 5 year warranty on the parts. I am very impressed by this since many manufacturers only include a 1 year warranty on their garage door openers.

The LiftMaster 3800 is a quiet, easy to install, space saving garage door opener with supreme safety and security features. The downside of this opener is that it needs gravity to close the garage door but that can be easily overcome by either not lifting the door all the way up or adjusting the tilt of the horizontal tracks. My conclusion about this product is that it is well worth the investment if you are looking for a garage door opener.
